Overview

The iCrystalbot Robot was designed as
a hybrid of a manta ray and an orchid.
It is made of a new crystalline material that iridesces,
with blue and magenta colors rippling through it.
The surface shimmers with exotic hues.
The robot moves with a fluid grace -
gliding across the floor as if it were a living sea creature.

Our robot can be controlled either by a joystick or over theInternet and
enables the user to control its motion across the floor and
initiate various pre-programmed movements.

Some background on why we created the iCrystalBot:

The concept for this robot evolved over the last few years. I've designed robots for the special effects industry and aerospace – undersea robots for NASA/NOAA, etc. So, I came to awareness that most robots look like they've been built by 10-year old boys – made of black pipes and bolted-on sewing machine motors. Not the most appealing creations.

I decided that what was needed is a robot with a feminine aesthetic,
something that women can relate to. For example in video productions, while special effects can certainly be done by CGI, most actresses, rather than performing against a blank green-screen background, prefer to interact with objects they can emote with.
But, again, the usual mechanical robots don't avail themselves to emotional relationships – other than running away.

Similarly, most personal robots also suffer from the same design characteristics.
Not something people would find appealing or be comfortable with.
While putting on a bear head on a military robot designed to carry a soldier from the battlefield improves the situation a little, it barely addresses the aesthetic requirements for a fully personal robot.
